Music is integral to worship at every service in St. Paul's, and a vital part of our ministry.
There is a well-established tradition of high-quality, classical music at St. Paul's. The Cathedral is known for its excellent music, and this draws many people to the Cathedral. The music programme as undergone considerable renewal in recent years, resulting in growth in the choir and its reputation in the city.
The Director of Music/Conductor is Dorianna Holowachuk. Organists/pianists for St. Paul's are David McIntyre, Jackie Chase and Deanna Zak. Evelyn Tischer is currently the pianist for 'Saturday @ 5' services.
The choir is a volunteer adult choir of approximately 30 people. They rehearse Thursday evenings from 7:00 - 9:00, from September to mid-June, and sing the 10:30 a.m. service on Sunday mornings during those months. One or two Evensongs are usually sung during Advent and Lent. The traditional 'Festival of Lessons and Carols' is presented every Advent, now sung on a Sunday morning instead of Evensong, which has proven to be very popular.
The choir often participates in community events, such as competing in the Regina Music Festival choral competitions, singing in the Rotary Carol Festival, or presenting a Christmas concert. These help to raise the profile of St. Paul's in the wider community.
There is a small but excellent Casavant pipe organ in the sanctuary which is used for all services, except 'Saturday @ 5' and Wednesday morning Eucharists. There is also a 6-foot 'Young Chang' grand piano in the sanctuary which is used for 'Sat. @ 5' and also for concerts held in the Cathedral.
The choir sings Psalm settings ranging from traditional Anglican Chant, to Plainsong, and Responsorial settings (Portland Psalter, Gordon Johnson). Mass settings are sung each week, from Richard Proulx, Jeffrey Jones, Robert Fleming and Heathcote Statham, to name a few. An anthem is also sung each week, from the traditional Anglican anthem repertoire but also including Spirituals and new compositions by composer and assistant organist, David McIntyre.
